When figuring out how much storage you need, try and visualize your items and how they would fit. It helps to have a plan, to use the space most efficiently. Think of it as a puzzle, use your space wisely, stack boxes and you will find that there is more room in there then the looks of it.
Here is a general reference:
- 5 x 5 = Small items, boxes, books
- 5 x 10 = Small 1 bedroom home
- 10 x 10 = 1 bedroom home
- 10 x 15 = 2-3 bedroom home
- 10 x 20 = 3-4 bedroom home
- 10 x 30 = 5-7 bedroom home
Containers vs. Self-Storage
Container storage is ideal for people who are planning to move either across the country or out of it, but have a move date that is a few months off. The downside is that you will not have easy access to your stored items (unless you rent a PODS type container and store it at your home).
Self-storage facilities, on the other hand, tend to have flexibility hours for you to come and go in the event that you packed something you suddenly need. Of course, the bigger the storage unit, the harder it will be to withdraw random items from the unit.
All points to consider while planning your storage needs.
